Love Does Not Promise Easy Street...

Love does not promise Easy Street
Or lap of luxuries
But pulls plans from beneath our feet
To bring us to our knees

Kindling desire’s sighs
Soon startles dreamers with the sting
Of ashes in our eyes

Love hones hearts to humility
With others first in mind
In the face of hostility
Love is patient and kind

No matter what thrills and delights
It will not be enough
Until we set our keenest sights
On learning how to love

The lifelong scholarship of love
Would drain all grin and grit
But for the faultless Promise of
The One who authored it

By loving grace and discipline
He helps us all life through
To wear the shoes that we are in
With purpose, glad and true

Then, when the gold of love runs blue
And snuffs the wishing star
Love is not something that we do
But something that we are

Col.3:14-15
And above all these put on love,
which binds everything together in perfect harmony.
And let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts,
to which indeed you were called in one body.
And be thankful.

This Fine, Fond Mingling...

Inspirational Quotes

This fine, fond mingling shapes and reshapes us
Because in love’s holding and letting go
We realize the beautiful measure
Of transient treasure in life’s moment-flow

We ought not cling then, but ever hold softly
The offerings rendered in Time’s tender tide
For just as the wave melts over the seashore
Moments wash over the mother and child

It is not long; this sojourn of laughter
Of heart-rending hurt; of hello and good-bye
Yet it is futile to try to chase after
The echoes that murmur in midnight’s deep sky

We ought to love then and love beyond reason
For what good are worry and wanting and spite?
All of life’s loaning is but for a season
Soon they slip silently from touch and sight

Treasure the measure of love’s kind bestowing
Because in its holding and letting go
Time gently shapes and re-shapes our knowing
This is the beauty in life’s moment-flow

Sometimes what I thought I knew surprises me by the realization that the older I get the less I know.

To Love...and Be Loved

To love
Then be loved in return
Is all I humbly ask
But God, You know my heart
So God,
Please fit me for this task

To love
And be loved in return
Is more than I deserve
But oh, it is life’s sweetest joy
Upon
This troubled earth

To love
And be loved in return
Is such a kind reward
Yet all that I can think
To say
Is thank-you, thank-you Lord

Only Love

What conquers evil, quenches hate?
What pales infinity above,
Beneath us, all around
Only one thing
Only love

What fights and wins with tenderness
And never fails in spite of us?
What exceeds thoughts circumference?
Only one thing
Only love

What is this thing of blood and dirt?
Unglamorous, its splattered glove
Yet yields a precious, perfect hurt?
Only one thing,
Only love

What fills lust’s futile wantonness
With promises of pain and grief?
What melts the cold and calloused heart
Dissolving chains of unbelief?

What is this thing whereby we die
Suffering its cross to prove
We cannot ever fully live
Without it; one thing
Only love

What spurs the gardener to prune the rose
Or the farmer to till his field?
Love bears the pain because it shows
Not then, but in the yield

Pondering Love

Love
Or the lack thereof
Touches everything
We think
Or say
Or do
Or see
To find it
We must give it
Love loves
Voluntarily
And never stops to tally
Its suffering
Or its cost
And only when we
Please ourselves
Is its wonder lost

© Janet Martin

Love is not a season
but each February
for a little while
We seem to find good reason
To ponder its grand wonder
And smile

It’s that time of year; pondering love.
Each February I attempt to ponder its wonder. This will be the focus of the next few weeks if mind and Muse co-operate. Tell someone you love them today...and why they are special to you! Don't wait. Tomorrow may be too late. I just told Victoria I love her. I love that she NEVER grumbles and I love how her smile lights up the room. So she says 'look, Mom, and flashes a grin, simultaneously hitting the light switch'. :) Yes, I love her silliness too.

May you have a love-ly day.

Un-coincidental...

'How did you know?'
I heard myself asking
As your thought touched mine
In passing

…it is inevitable, I suppose
After suffering thorns
At last, sweet last
The rose

Intangible Satisfaction

You warm me,
Not with cloak or shawl
Nor with sweaters of wool
Or quilted blankets
In nostalgic hue
But,
With the beautiful
Intangible
And ever irreplaceable
Thought of you

You touch me
Not with gentle brush
Of fingertips
Nor with the
Pleasing whisper
Of your lips
But you
Touch me
Like flesh can never do
In the beautiful,
Bittersweet
Satisfying
Thought of you

Monday Musings~

A mirror reflects the image
A sea reflects the sky
But thought’s finished span
Reflects the man
Not visible to naked eye

***

Man looks on the outward
But God sees the heart
There is no masquerade
For this innermost part

***

Love; simple yet so complex
And hard to understand
How both The Giving and The Taking
Are gifts from His hand

***

Vanity and pride are as easy to hide
As a giant zit on the end of a nose
As a man thinks, so is he
As his thought falls, so his footstep goes

***

Judgment gushes from mouths of piety
Compassion bleeds from lips of Love
Pious judgment offers no redemption
But redemption pours from Love’s Source above

***

I held you as a baby then you grew
I watched you as a child then you flew
I cannot restrain the Hand of Time
But pray you through; for now you climb

Wednesday Words on Love

There is no power whose strength exceeds
Love

There is nothing without limits but this…
Love

There is a universal language without words…
Love

There is an arm that cannot be out-reached…
Love

There is a message not easily misunderstood…
Love

There is nothing in existence without this…
Love

Beauty shines in one simple word…
Love

Take time for others; take time to…
Love

The only thing we receive as we give is…
Love

We could all use a little more…
Love

…therefore we should all give a little more…
Love

We cannot pretend…
Love
