Years From Now

Happy 2nd day of 2017!

Ah, years from now we’ll speak of how these were the days of such and such
And marvel at the changeless ways time changes everything we touch
And years from now we’ll look back and revisit what we not yet know
Where we are ever at the mercy of God’s love and season-flow

Dusk’s benediction soon will fold the hold of this new day to rest
Where it seems we are always at the beck and call of east to west
Goodnight, goodnight, good morning, oh, and off we go to work and school
While morning slips to noon and noon to twilight’s pink and purple pool

Our guesswork often falls far short of what God has in mind for us
Where faith and fear are rivals warring while we pray or fret and fuss
And, years from now when we speak of days lived and loved and always lost
We will, like those before us learn the difference twixt price and cost

…where years from now God still will BE, hope’s confidante and confidence
and all who trust in Him will still find peace and death’s deliverance
For, years from now, in spite of what we talk about, doubtless is this;
The God from the beginning will still be the faithful God that IS

The one thing we can depend on is He beyond time’s number chart
Greater than anything we fathom yet Keeper of human heart
Then, though we cannot know what, years from now will fill yon When
One thing we do; the God that was and is will be the same, amen

 They will perish, but you remain;
they will all wear out like a garment.
Like clothing you will change them
    and they will be discarded.
 But you remain the same,
and your years will never end.

Psalm 102:26-27

Every good and perfect gift is from above,
coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights,
who does not change like shifting shadows.

James 1:17

Dear Year...(or, Learning the Art of Good-bye)

Mostly you move me with beauty of duty
Morning-fresh splendor and twilight-plush sigh
You spell the words to my life-story, darling
Mostly with hugs of hello and good-bye
My, how the eye is a cup holding rivers
My, how the heart cradles what Past endears
Mostly you move me with common anointing
Where tick-tock offspring shapes Time into years

Mostly you move me with measure of moments
Who knew a lifetime could fit into this?
Hand-holding, foot-slipping, laughter-tear treasure
Learning the art of your double-edged kiss
Tell me again where you go and how, darling
Did we not meet just a short while or so?
Yet you are poised for eternal departing
My heart whispers ‘stay’ while Edict orders ‘go

Mostly you move me with love’s longing sorrow
My, how tomorrow overtakes today
Moving the meter of ‘Time left remaining’
Near, ever nearer to that Far Away
Hold me close, darling, before you must journey
Into that land from which none can return
Mostly you move me with unuttered yearning
For that which somehow I cannot quite learn

Of Breath-bindings

They drift away
Gossamer shells
Without a flicker
Of farewell
And though they hold
Within their clutch
The staggering
Softness of touch
Where love and loss
And longing bleed
Where hope and faith
And honor plead
Where blood and sweat
And tears caress
The footfalls
Of our humanness
And monumental
Penitence
Bound in half-breath
Deliverance
They slip into the
Languid hour
Plucking the
Glory from the flower
And children from
A mother’s reach
They rend, they croon
Tender and teach
Then slip into
Impassive air
Buoyed by whispered
Wings of prayer
Or perhaps
Just a little sigh
As we murmur
Good-bye, good-by
But they do not turn
To reply
Or brush the teardrop
From our eye
Though they have stolen
Part by part
The utmost linings
Of the heart
They spin into
The atmosphere
Beneath a guise
That we call
Year

Janet~

So many year endings and beginnings in a year. This heat-wave has finished off this year's peonies abruptly, the school-year ends, another year of summer-vacation begins, Moments molding Milestones melting into moments making memories.
Inhale.
Exhale.
Life.
